A reminder that on Saturday, April 1, 2006 the reconstruction of North Collier Boulevard, Phase I A, will begin from San Marco Road to Amazon Court. Portions of North Collier Boulevard will be reduced to two-way, single-lane traffic (two lanes, one in each direction) with a speed limit of 20 mph. The construction schedule will dictate on which side of the road traffic will be reconfigured. There will be access to all businesses, condominiums, and residences within this area.Please anticipate delays, allow extra driving time, and be alert when traveling through the construction zones. Drivers should, whenever practical, plan trips through the construction areas using right hand turns to access homes and businesses.The objectives of this project are to: improve traffic flow; eliminate flooding that occurs along Collier Boulevard; provide a wider sidewalk for pedestrians and bicyclists; upgrade an aging water and sewer utility system; improve fire safety protection; and create an aesthetically pleasing landscaped corridor. The newly constructed boulevard will have 12-foot travel lanes (same as current width); curb and gutter with a substantial storm drainage system; landscaped medians; meandering sidewalks with widths between 6 feet and 8 feet; and trees between the sidewalk and the curb. Overhead power lines will be removed and placed underground. New decorative street lights will be added.All traffic signals will be replaced with hurricane resistant poles and new electronic controls. Median openings that interfere with traffic movement will be closed and others will provide for left turn traffic lanes.When the section from San Marco Road to Amazon Court is substantially finished, the contractor will then renovate the section between Amazon Court and the Smokehouse Bay Bridge, with completion by December 31, 2006. In April 2007 the contractor will begin Phase II between the Smokehouse Bay Bridge and Rose Court.The renovated North Collier Boulevard project will be similar in appearance to the new South Collier Boulevard, scheduled for completion in mid-May of this year.We apologize for the inconveniences caused by construction over the past year. Improvements to Elkcam Circle, Bald Eagle Drive, and Bald Eagle/Heathwood/San Marco Road were undertaken, in part, to help traffic movement during the reconstruction of North Collier Boulevard. We hope our citizens have observed better traffic movement and fewer delays with the new turn lanes and resurfaced roads.We thank you for your continued patience during the reconstruction of North Collier Boulevard.
